July was a bit crazy. We were gone for a week and a half on two different trips, so we didn’t do our normal grocery hauls and I didn’t document it (well I started at the beginning of the month, but didn’t keep it up when things got crazy).
For the record, we spent $305 on food in July, which doesn’t include food for a week long at a family reunion in Las Vegas. It does include a Sam’s Club haul right after our trip. When we got back I had my husband go by Sam’s Club on his way home from work to get milk. He offered to grab the rest of our Sam’s Club usuals, so I gave him my list.
So in August, I don’t have a beginning of the month Sam’s Club haul to show you. We still have several gallons of milk, two 5-lb bags of cheese, half of a 5-lb container of sour cream, bananas, salad greens and some other things left from the odd shopping trip at the end of July.
As usual, if you’d rather watch show you our grocery haul, you can check out the video below!

Many of you have asked what we’re going to do about meat since we used to get most of our meat from Zaycon Fresh which went out of business last month. I didn’t get any meat in August, as we still have meat in the freezer, but I’m going to check out the ads more and look more closely at the meat at Sam’s Club. You can expect to see meat more often in my grocery hauls though.
If you’re curious what our meals look like, you can get a peek in this blog post.

These prices seem crazy low! Is this because of where you live, or because you’re buying in bulk.

Last month I have up diet cola, not to save money but because I’m serious about losing weight. (The theory is that the sweetness of diet sodas makes your body think it’s getting a calorie hit, then, when that doesn’t come, you overeat because your body tells you it’s hungry.) I’ve wanted to give it up for a while but thought I needed the caffeine to keep going. The first day I had a splitting headache, but since then I haven’t even missed it. And here is the really surprising thing – I feel LESS tired now! I had a pretty serious addiction so was spending about $15/week on soda. The savings isn’t huge, especially since the rest of the family still drinks it – I don’t buy it anymore but DH still does (I’m working on it . . .) But it’s still about $60/month. I have no idea if it’s helping with weight loss. Our scales are broken, and I gave up sugar the same week, so even if I am losing weight i don’t know if it’s the sugar or soda. But, I definitely recommend it for feeling less tired and more alert!

How do you have bananas and HALF of a sour cream container left over from July? Don’t those things go bad?

I love Sprouts. It is my favorite store for produce. The deals that they have in the produce section have saved us a lot of money. I have found it much easier to stick to our grocery budget with a Sprouts nearby.

We’ve been really impressed with the quality of the meat of our Sam’s Club here in Northern Utah–in fact, I refuse to get chicken breasts anywhere else just because the quality is so much better from SC. I’ll usually get a couple big things of breasts and then a big package of ground beef, and we’re about good for the month since I just freeze it in dinner-size portions.
I was bummed Zaycon Fresh went out of business–I’d been on the verge of ordering from them (but I’m now glad I waited!).
