Normally we do our monthly grocery shopping at the beginning of the month, but in September my husband and I were gone to Washington DC for a financial bloggers conference so it was nearly halfway through the month before we made our monthly trip to Sams’ Club and Winco.
I did make a quick $35 trip to Grocery Outlet before we headed out on our trip. I shared that shopping trip in a quick video:
September’s Monthly Grocery Haul
Our regular monthly grocery haul was smaller than usual, partly because the month was half over and partly because we still have many freezer meals that my kids and I assembled last month.
As usual, you can either watch or listen to me go through everything we bought in the quick video below, or you can just check out the items and complete price list below the video.

Between our monthly grocery haul and our trip to Grocery Outlet at the very beginning of the month, we spent just $172. That’s less than half of what we have budgeted for food during the month, so stay tuned for September’s monthly budget update to see where the rest of it goes.
If you have any questions about how we handle grocery shopping or our food budget, I am happy to answer them in the comments or even make a video on the topic. Just let me know in the comments.

Do you have a bread outlet near you ? I buy my bread/bagels/english muffins, etc 4/$5. And if you spend $10, you get a free item.

I’m always impressed by your grocery budget. We’re in South Africa and moving around almost every day, so we’re going to the grocery store almost every day – and while wages are incredibly low here (minimum wage starts at about USD$1/hour) and unemployment is around 45%, grocery prices for most things aren’t too much cheaper. We’re eating lots of pb&j as it’s a quick and easy lunch. Not always a safe lunch though – a few days ago we were attacked by monkeys in the middle of our picnic and had to flee to the safety of the car! We’re spending a few days at Kruger National Park at the moment. Yesterday we saw elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, buffalo, warthogs, wildebeest, impalas, nyalas, elands, dwarf mongeese, crocodiles, lions, a hyena, ostriches, baboons, vervet monkeys, some amazing birds, and maybe a leopard. We’re still hoping to see cheetahs, African wild dogs, and get a definite leopard spotting. Further South we saw many different types of antelope (springbok, bontebok, hartebeest, grysbok, druiker,) African penguins, some whales, quite a few dassie, and three meerkats – two at Addo Elephant Park and one in a supermarket in Cradock. So, self-catering on holidays instead of going out to eat definitely has its advantages – how many people get to see a meerkat in a grocery store?

So many cool animals! Sounds like you guys had a great time on your adventure!
That’s crazy that food prices aren’t much cheaper considering the wages are so low. That’s got to be hard for the people there!

So how were the pancakes in a cup?
Stephanie says
I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy them at full price, but for a 50 cent find, they were fine. 🙂

What? Spending under $50 at Sam’s Club? Impossible! 🙂 I’m always proud of myself if I spend less than $70 when I go, but you’ve got me beat!
Stephanie says
I totally know what you mean! 🙂
